Cody, the golden retriever sits on his front porch quietly watching out over our neighborhood. If the dog with the bad owners who lets him run loose in the streets comes by Cody, Cody gives him a chase off back to his home.
But Cody has wisdom, he doesn't just indiscriminately chase other animals, in fact, one day he and I took a walk around the bird watching trail at the preserve. We ran into a mountain lion, much too close, I might add.
My vision isn't that good and I thought it was a dog, mostly because I didn't expect to see a mountain lion.
Cody was young then, but he knew, as we stood less than a few yards from the formidable cat, that we had to stay still and stand our ground. Which we both seemed to know intuitively.
We managed to get away from the cat without a scrape but it was something neither of us will forget. (I'm sorry I do believe animals have sharp memories)
We've been close ever since.
I love to look across the street in the morning looking at my friend, Cody, in his yard, curled up watching the birds, his owners, and listening for any sound which he may just have to check out.
But he never goes out of the boundaries of his yard, which has no fence. He's so well trained and so attentive to his owners that he won't leave the yard without them.
However, they can't leave without him either. He's a passenger in the car, head out the window, his golden blond locks blowing in the wind. He's a good boy...
